from Wendy Henderson

The Heart of Worship

In the American culture, we are obsessed with the “behind the scenes” of things. We will pay more for backstage passes, or get excited when we select the “bonus materials” on our favorite DVD or see a sneak peek of a new music video while we’re waiting for our Youtube clip to load. One of my favorite T.V. shows is “How It’s Made”- truly a dream come true for avid and aspiring nerds! Was I concerned 45 seconds before the show started with how elbow copper pipe fitting is constructed? No! But now I know……. how it’s made. So here is my contribution to the near obsession we have with the “behind the scenes” of things.

This Sunday we are singing a song titled “The Heart of Worship” by Matt Redman. I came about a clip where Matt and his pastor Mike Pilavachi (pastor of Soul Survivor Watford Church) discussed how this endearing worship staple came about. Pilavachi shares that his congregation’s worship (holistically not just musically) had become “stale”; that the congregation had become “worship connoisseurs”. He says the congregation was more focused on “what the worship did for them”.

Seeing this disconnect, Mike did something radical. One Sunday, he informed his church that they (the congregation) would lead the entire service. They were to sit in circles and if no one offered up anything, they would sit in silence. Astonishingly, this went on for a few Sundays but something began to happen. Church members began bringing scripture and singing songs and true congregational worship began manifesting itself. During these congregation worship services, Matt wrote the song “The Heart of Worship” and he and Pastor Mike began conversing about whether or not this song would be presented to the congregation or if the song was too personal. We know the end to this story.

Eventually the services went back to the previous setup but the church body learned an important lesson- worship is not a sideline sport we can run commentary on but not partake in. Worship is not about us! Even though “The Heart of Worship” was released many years ago, it resonates with so many believers as a redirect to what worship is truly about: God. It’s not about what we get from it. Worship is our offering to the Lord; our simple sacrifice; our gift. When we worship; be it musically, through fasting, reading the Word, or prayer, we make ourselves vulnerable to God and His will for us.

“I’m coming back to the heart of worship and it’s all about You, it all about You.
I’m sorry Lord for the thing I’ve made it, when it’s all about You, it’s all about You- Jesus” – Matt Redman

So, my question to you church, on Sundays are you concerned with who you’re sitting next to, or that favorite worship song that was left out, or the coffee creamer flavors? Or, are you concerned that your worship (good singing voice not necessary) is wafting toward the heavens reaching our God as a sweet aroma to His nostrils?

“For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.”

-2 Corinthians 2:15

The Overview: Justice and Missions are linked together at Sanctuary Columbus. We care about the issues of injustice that affect our city as well as other cities across the globe. And we’re involved because Jesus cares about the hungry, the thirsty, the prisoner, the naked…and as much as we follow Jesus we should care about these issues, too. We could try to address these issues in several places around the world or we could settle on a few places and commit to a long-term partnership. That’s what this Ethiopia trip is all about; finding one community to invest in for long term development.

Sanctuary is joining doma international on this trip. doma has been involved with Bora, Ethiopia for more than three years by offering medical support to provide holistic care to vulnerable mothers. doma is building the HIDOTA HEALTH CENTER, a Prenatal and Early Childhood Health Center in Bora. “Hidota” means hope in the local language of Gamogna. The center will focus on bringing hope through maternal and child health and wellness. It will provide pregnancy, delivery, and post-delivery care to mothers. It will also provide well-child care, immunizations, and sick care to infants and children. Education will include nutrition, infant/child development and care, and basic hygiene.

The Trip: Pastor Rich is joining this team from doma to learn how Sanctuary Columbus can get involved long-term in Bora. Concurrently, a Medical Team will offer primary care clinics around this region. Future opportunities include digging a water well for cleaner water, adding grade level education beyond third grade, training church leaders and church planters, and medical missions.

Donations: If you would like to provide donations for kids in this community, here is a shopping list! You can drop the items off on Sunday morning at Sanctuary. Have fun!

Starting October 9, we have a great opportunity to journey together as a community. Strong is a 7-week series focused on spiritually strengthening us in our families, relationships and character. Spiritual strength comes not from our religious efforts towards God, but from the time we spend in relationship with God — and the STRONG series is designed to help us to develop that relationship.

For seven weeks, the Sunday messages will coordinate with individual study/experiences and group gatherings reinforce the same end: becoming strong in our relationship with God. For more specifics on the series and how the pieces fit together, see our Strong flyer.

Obviously, being part of a small group is a key part of the journey. If you’d like to join a small group, please email Pastor Rich. We’ll help you find a group that fits your weekly schedule.
